They say when you’re onto a good thing, invite your family! And that is exactly what the Minards have done, with three territories under the ownership and management of various Minards family members. Today we’re talking to Corey and Liana Minards – the operators of The Leather Doctor Bundaberg territory in Queensland. We sat down and had a chat to them about why they joined The Leather Doctor and what they love about running their own business. Here’s what they had to say:
What was it that attracted you to join the Leather Doctor business?
Liana and I were living in New Zealand doing our own thing, but this was a great opportunity for both of us to spread our wings and see how much we could achieve. It was also great to join in on the family business as my parents, Jon and Jackie Minards, run the Rockhampton territory, and my Brother and Sister in Law, Cameron and Kayla Minards, run the Mackay territory.
What did you do prior to becoming a Leather Doctor?
In Christchurch I was an electrician. Liana was an accountant.
What territory do you operate?
We run The Leather Doctor Bundaberg territory, 4 hours north of Brisbane.
What have you been able to achieve via your time as a Leather Doctor/what do you hope to achieve?
In the short time we have been doing this, we have learned a great deal about running a business and have learnt to work toward our strengths and manage our weaknesses as a couple to be as successful as possible.
What advice would you give to someone looking to purchase a franchise/operate a franchise?
Be prepared to work hard to achieve what you desire! There is a lot to learn but the benefits of this lifestyle far outweigh the struggles.
What’s the most interesting job you’ve worked on to date?
There was a job involving a lounge being accidentally cut by a removal agency. After we repaired the damage, the customers and the removal agency were both super pleased and couldn’t thank us enough. It gives us great pleasure and confidence knowing our repairs can help people.
What do you love most about being a Leather Doctor?
We love the lifestyle that comes with running a business, there is so much freedom and fluidity that comes with it.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself?
We have a passion for making good barista coffee.
Describe your ideal weekend?
Hanging at home enjoying a relaxing weekend, watching TV shows, movies, and eating good food.
